EMG 001 Dub Sirens

One of my deepest fascinations with music as an art form, is its intangible aspect, (of course on a deeper level, sound is the result of physical vibration and how one experiences those vibrations through the air, so it is a “physical” thing) but compared to a painting, sculpture or other work of art it exists only in this intangible grey area with its physical properties being the medium which it is stored on ( vinyl, tape, cassette, cd, digital…) . I find it incredible, i can spend hours, days, years working on a piece of art ‘singular’, created with physical tangible things (instruments, tape machines synths) transforming it first into the digital realm by recording it into a computer, and when it is finished… it can be shared with the entire world, who can experience that same piece of art in its entirety as many times as they like. Incredible….

However with anything this great comes its disadvantages, The current musical industry can easily exploit this, companies like spotify only paying fractions of a cent per play de-valuing music as a whole while still profiting off of everyone else’s hard work. Another disadvantage could be the lack of quality control, as now anyone can release anything, anytime, All of this over saturation and over consumption leads to a disconnection from the fans and the artist on both an emotional and financial level. i feel now more than ever people seek to bridge this link.

As an independent artist in this current climate it becomes harder to make make this connection Financial it seems like it can be done through services like patreon (if you want to go the tutorial youtuber road). However providing fans with a physical tangible item they can hold in there hands becomes harder and harder. CDs are dead, tapes are a little bit too hipster, and usb sticks ??? …… no, is Vinyl the answer? Personally i have brainstormed pressing vinyls but what has turned me away from this idea, is not the cost, but the wait times and waste. Who knows what life is going to be like in 10 months when the wax finally arrives. Maybe there isn’t the time or motivation to go push the albums, and then what? more plastic just ends up in the ocean?

While working on the EMG 001 album my eurorack modular system was constantly growing (out of control) i remember one moment sitting in aw in front of it, having spend stupid amounts of money on the system i thought that i should maybe understand how all of this actually is working, or at least make some effort to understand the electronics behind it. My journey started by building a few guitar pedal kits, watching youtube tutorials, and later building more complicated euro rack modules. After a few the more complicated builds i felt good enough with my abilities and took on a project I had been wanting to do for years. The classic dub siren, not only is this is the simplest version of an analog synth, but a classic sound, tied to one of the most influence music styles, for me as an artist. I figured it would be a good start. around the same time as i started the dub siren project a happy accident with a diy guitar pedal build not fitting into the provided case led me to start experimenting putting the electronics into old cigarette and cigar boxes. One thing led to another and after building a few Dub sirens into these old smoke boxes i released i had something.

Not only do i find these to be a fitting physical representation of the music on the EMG 001 album, combining intricate and beautiful pieces from the past with future sounds of electronics, these Dub sirens pay homage to the innovators of the music styles which have influenced me the most. with this i pay my deepest respects to the creators and innovators that have come before me.
